Strictly speaking, an attorney is not necessary to start a non profit organization. But legal aid can make your life easier and save you from costly mistakes.

It is entirely possible to launch a new non profit, without having to consult a lawyer or an accountant. However, it is also very desirable to have an attorney when reviewing documents prior to submission to the state or the federal government.

As a lawyer you trust to help start a non profit organization depends largely up to you. If you have time, energy and confidence, you can fill most or all of the procedures for you. However, if the thought of legal jargon and IRS forms to scare you, or if the value of your time on your money, then you are better having a lawyer handle things for you.

If saving money is a priority:
1. Read about what to do:
* Incorporate the status of non profit organization
* Obtain a federal tax exemption
* Obtain a tax-exempt status
2. Fill in the necessary forms and discuss in depth.
3. Once the forms are clear and without errors can have an attorney review your documents.

Finding a lawyer
Ideally, you want an attorney experienced in non profit law. He or she must also have contributed to other organizations and obtaining tax exemptions. Or you can use a lawyer who is willing to take the time to learn what to do (for example, someone fresh from law school). You might be tempted to ask your lawyer friends for help, but before taking legal aid, you remember this warning: The lawyer may not have the necessary training, and may be reluctant to take the time to do the best job possible.

There are thousands of ways to find a qualified lawyer.

* Contact your local United Way or non profit and ask them to recommend someone.
* Contact bar pro bono program suggestions.
* If you live near a law school if They Have That a legal clinic could help you (for example, may be eligible for assistance from small clinic in the Faculty of Business Law, if applicable).
* Go to find law or service online and type as a non-profit and tax exempt “in the number of legal research and your city and state of the search box on the site.

The organizing committee has decided to strategically efforts to raise funds and establish an Office of development. Currently, the budget cannot afford to hire a staff member – you must call for volunteers. It a very common scenario for most companies for fundraising, non-profit again. Although it would be advantageous to hire a professional development and fundraising as the first step to achieve the fundraising efforts is an option not usually available immediately.

Here are ten tips to help anyone who volunteers or the beginning of an office development for profit:

1. Sort development efforts in five categories. If you use paper or electronic files, or both, from the beginning you need to organize information on development in these categories: companies and foundations (solicitations and contributions), government grants, special events (fund of funds and friend), member (units, shares, etc.), and general information (various). All data and files must be stored as exercises.

2. Contributions in kind shall be recorded, including the donor’s name, the type of donation, the date of receipt (and, if applicable, the estimated value) and the date of award was sent thanks. Keep all correspondence relating to contributions. This can be captured electronically or on paper records of individual contributions. It is not uncommon for a donor to request an audit of the contribution to the organization.

3. Keep a separate file or a file for each section of current and potential funding source. Maintain contact and related information stored in alphabetical order for each foundation, company or other source of government funding. Remain active grants and subsidies received separate process or rejected. Use a calendar view for monitoring the control of the grant. Most development professionals use a spreadsheet to monitor the activities of the grant letter requesting the status of the final grant.

4. Use online tools such as research grants to many of the agency cannot afford. Donors forum and the granting and station Web sites of the organization of the particular tasks are very useful tools for research grants. Ensure check the state department of human services and rural development sites services.

5. Every special event and benefit from the application must be located in their specific folder based on the event. A complete mailing list for each event must be included and coded for board members and their contacts and other information relevant to your company or specific activities. Because there are several people involved in planning and execution of these events is very useful to have hard copies of the required information clearly and easily available files.

6. A worksheet on stocks of special benefits should include: date, name of contact person, amount, payment and special notes. Always send a confirmation of whether the participants were not delivered or taken tickets. Email works well for this, so the objective of maintaining an updated list of e-mail all the benefactors.

7. Membership cannot be a stable and reliable source of income for nonprofit organizations. It ‘important to consider the current situation, because it is a source of additional income generation. Traditionally, most organizations have found that by mid-January is a good time to send the nomination form for the annual membership.

8. Although it is tempting to use a spreadsheet tracking the contributions of newsletters, events, special equipment, etc. over time, become cumbersome and inefficient to collect data needed to communicate with donors and supporters of the organization to increase revenue . Professional Development recommends that organizations purchase from a donor program information based on commercial software as quickly as possible. Sin, one that is very difficult to analyze the contributions of donors. There are far more reliable on the market, ranging from the cost of a few hundred dollars to thousands. Before investing in a system, the Internet search and communication with organizations with similar tasks. Tech Soup is an excellent resource and offers discounts on software.

9. If the organization decides to hire a professional fundraiser and/ or producer of award, not an agreement that granted him a percentage of funds raised. Although many professional fundraisers encourage this type of agreement, it is unethical for professionals to participate in developing this type of fee payments for services. If you have trouble locating a professional fundraiser, the Association of Fundraising Professionals is an excellent source of information.

10. There are many reports that non profit organization to provide the different entities. The office development will be largely responsible for keeping the records. The Board require reports on the budget. Donors need information to the IRS. IRS 990 forms required. Foundations require budgets, annual reports and above taxpayer. The key point for the production of these reports is the organization.

As development director of several non profit organizations have submitted more than 1,000 grant applications to foundations. Apply for a grant to a foundation is one thing, but getting the grant real adopted is something completely different. Here’s how to apply for a grant to a foundation correctly and immediately increase your chances of actually getting the grant approved.

First phase – Do your research properly – First, you have to do all your research properly apply for grants. Go to the website of Foundation Center, visit the foundation website to find out what their needs were funded in the past, and make sure that your agency or nonprofit meets these requirements. If organizations for funds from the foundation for children and the organization of classical music is a nonprofit, you have no chance of being funded by the foundation, do not waste time by sending a request. See also grants already funded by each foundation so you can see what programs they like and what the average amount of a grant. So you know how to ask (if fund, usually around $ 10,000, which does not apply for a grant of $ 50,000, which is probably not serious.)

Second phase – Make sure you know at the time of grant – Every foundation has a length of time required to obtain a grant proposal. Many also have two or three cycles of the year award, so if you miss a deadline, no problem, another will arrive in a few months.

Third phase – Identify your needs – Make sure you are quite clear in my head Why do I need the money and what will release him before writing the grant application. If you ask for $ 10,000 as a foundation, make sure you know what is going to use the money to start writing before their implementation.

Fourth phase – start writing your grant application – Some foundations will be required to complete some forms that can be downloaded from their website. Some foundations want just a general question of subsidy, which is
easier than you can use whatever you used before, just change the name of the foundation. Some foundations have an application form online, which is dead easy to fill.

Fifth phase – Follow the instructions correctly – All Foundation tells you exactly what they need. Just give them the information required, neither more nor less. If you can follow the instructions correctly, that tells a potential donor who can use the money you say you use it too.

Sixth phase – Includes all the required documents – Once you’ve finished writing your grant application, be sure to include all documents requested. All foundations will need at least last year’s budget (some may require 2-3 years of budget) and a copy of its budget this year and a copy of the project budget is that requests for funding. It also includes a brochure on the program you are requesting funds, and a brochure on the organization. Remember to include a copy of your non profit the letter, as will the Foundation to ensure That you can legally give money. (If the agency does not have a the letter, which are not eligible to receive grants from most foundations.)

Seventh phase – write a letter of Nice – Do not forget to write a letter to accompany your application to explain who you are, what your body, the amount of money you ask and what happens to use the award. Many people do not send a letter, which greatly reduces your chances of receiving a grant foundation.

With these seven simple steps, you should be able to apply for a grant from the foundation successfully. Overall, because the foundations studied carefully before grant applications and has completed the application form carefully and accurately, my success rate with the receipt of donations was approximately 50%. This is a very high rate of approval of the case. It is also, however, can achieve the same result if you follow the above steps.

There are specific forms of information that should be included in any grant proposal sent to nonprofit donors. To start, you need a convincing cover letter. This is the introduction to your proposal, and lets nonprofit donors that engage in frequent corporate philanthropy know the exact purpose for the funding. The cover letter should also introduce your overall business concept to nonprofit donors. Moreover, it should also talk about other projects in which you’ve successfully solicited for nonprofit grants, if applicable. Make sure that you include the ways that the donation to your organization will positively impact the nonprofit donor corporation as well.

This will appeal to companies that participate in corporate philanthropy, since these corporations have already arranged to use a portion of their budget for charitable causes. Next, you’ll want to compose a cover sheet. This is a summary of your overall proposal, and is a very important part of your nonprofit grant funding request. The objective, the methods that you’ll use for the project, and the amount of money you’ll need for the program you’re organizing should be included in the summary. Most nonprofit donors refer to this page several times before making the final decision to award funds to your organization. The program objectives and goals should be outlined in detail after the summary. This will give you the opportunity to inform nonprofit donors of how you plan to spend the grant funding in sections. You should include one goal for each of the problems you are trying to address (i. e. if you’re requesting money to feed hungry children in your area, you should detail how much money you’re going to need to feed children in one specific neighborhood in your city).

The methodology of your project should be explained next in your nonprofit grant application. In this statement, repeat your objectives and give a clear description of the activities your staff will engage in to accomplish your goals. The timeline of all your activities is outlined in this section as well, so that the nonprofit donor will have an understanding as to the timing of monies being allocated to your organization, be it incrementally or all at once. Be sure to be as detailed as possible when you’re outlining the evaluation and budget sections of your nonprofit grant proposal — you never be too detailed when it comes to appealing to a nonprofit donor.

Be sure to check fundraising directories for nonprofit donors in your area, and continue to develop your nonprofit organization to give your company a broader appeal.

Some of the web sites offer resource guides for free grant applications and some of them are web sites of organizations that actually award nonprofit grants. Both sites are valuable for different reasons. The sites that have non-profit grants to award are the sites one should visit when applying for a federal grant. These web sites explain the specific requirements one must meet in order to be eligible. For some agencies, the grant money has to be used to start a business. For other agencies, the grant money has to be spent on education.

Some agencies require that you live in a certain area or belong to a certain demographic. There are many potential requirements, and if an individual meets them, he has an opportunity to collect the nonprofit grants they have available. However, these opportunities can only be found one at a time. The second type of web site will contain information on free grant applications. An individual can complete an application on these sites. For the most part, these sites are basically guides to a many individual sites like the ones discussed above. These sites usually require a membership.

The membership may require a monthly fee or the purchase of a book or resource guide. If you are able to get hundreds or thousands of free grant applications, it may be worth investing in a membership, simply because there is a slim chance of finding all the government grants that are out there on your own. Even if you could find hundreds or thousands of grants, it would require many hours of research, so paying the fee may be worth it. A good resource guide will save you hundreds of hours of your valuable time. It may also be wise to take advantage of the free trials offered on these web sites.

You can sign up for a free trial and pay small shipping and handling fee to receive the guide in the mail. At the end of the trial you are required to pay for the service, but if you cancel before the end of the trial, you usually get to keep the guide. At the very least, you have gained some time, perhaps a week or even a month, to find all the grants you can. Because finding free grant money can be tedious, you may want to try the following resources: Free Grant Applications is a web site that lists some reputable services. Also, the non profit grants review page offers some excellent information.

Both sites offer free trials, but are certain to cancel your membership before the trial is complete. Really take advantage of the free trials to research as many grants as possible. The more seeds you plant, the more likely you are to find the free money that you are seeking. There is plenty of federal grant money available for non profits and it is a simple matter of finding it.
